What it does
Pneumatic Actuator
A pneumatic actuator turns the valve stem with compressed air to perform the opening and closing movement. It allows a valve to be operated remotely and quickly on lines where manual operation is difficult, unsafe or too slow.
There are two basic operating modes. In a DOUBLE ACTING actuator both opening and closing are performed by compressed air; if the air supply is lost the valve stays where it is. In a SINGLE ACTING (spring return) actuator opening is done by air and closing by the internal spring; if the air supply is lost the valve returns to its safe position by itself. Which one to use is determined by the safety requirement of the line.
It is used with quarter-turn valves and is common on ball valves and butterfly valves. The actuator is mounted to the valve body through an adapter bracket and is integrated into the automation system together with accessories such as solenoid valves, limit switch boxes and positioners.
